When you hear the word "frontier," what comes to mind? Is it stories of cowboys with six-shooters, pioneers in covered wagons seeking their homestead, or Native Americans hunting buffalo on the plains? While these images reflect the rich history of the three states that make up the Rocky Mountain District, they’re not why we call ourselves Frontier Missions.
Most are familiar with the term “rural,” defined by the National Rural Health Association as areas with fewer than 500 people per square mile. But fewer know about the designation “frontier,” which applies to areas with six or fewer people per square mile—nearly 1/100th of the rural definition.
Across the Rocky Mountain District—Montana, Utah, and Wyoming—most counties meet this frontier standard. In fact, Wyoming itself averages just 5.91 people per square mile. This is what makes our district "Frontier."
But what makes us "Missions" are the unique challenges we face in reaching people across this vast landscape. The greater Salt Lake City-Ogden-Provo metro area alone has 2.6 million people, served by only five UPCI churches. In addition to the usual metro missions challenges, over 60% of the state identifies as Mormon.
Our district is also home to more than 20 Native American tribes, living on and off reservations across our three states. Each tribe has its own language, culture, and traditions, requiring thoughtful understanding to reach them effectively.
Currently, we have just 38 churches spread across 330,000 square miles—a region more than 20% larger than Texas. With over 5 million people living in this vast area, many reside in towns and cities more than an hour from the nearest church. This is our Frontier Missions field. Will you answer the call and help us reach it?
